Research proposal

The VALLE research will directly inform my M.Arch thesis work at the University of Washington. The thesis proposes radical building and product typologies that might encourage American lifestyles to become less environmentally destructive yet still maintain the local and global mobility that we desire. In this, there are two areas of focus:

  1. collaborative design and fabrication innovation
  2. design response to local, regional, and global mobility (relating to energy, environmental, virtual, and transportation infrastructure - please see the diagram “THESIS CONCEPT”)

My hypothesis suggests that a cultural attitude shift is required to perpetuate responsible projects, but at the same time proposes that a strong innovation economy that prototype projects helps to initiate the shift. My VALLE study in Norway will look towards Scandinavian social, political, and design mentalities to better understand connections between design/innovation economies, progressive/sustainable built environments (building types, urban planning), and mobile lifestyles (work vs. retreat typologies).

Research methods

This thesis project begins in my home 'no.D' of Seattle but will develop during travel and design in Scandinavia. The project involves 3 months of research in Norway observing nomadic culture (traditional Sami people and modern Norwegian retreat) and architectural precedents by bicycle + 4 months of studio design work at the Royal Academy of the Arts in Copenhagen. Consistent with the idea of 'no.D', the project will maintain digital connectivity via an internet wiki site to advisors at the University of Washington (Seattle), the Oslo School of Architecture and Design (Oslo), and the Royal Academy of the Arts (Copenhagen). This exercise will not only test the possibility of connectivity while roaming, it will demonstrate the increased depth of cultural and design perspective that is available in a modern nomadic lifestyle.
